Australia’s Culture Capital
Melbourne is the creative capital of Australia. The city has beautiful beaches, but beach culture doesn’t define Melbourne. A thriving multiculturalism is knitted into the fabric of Melbourne and residents are as comfortable in sophisticated opera houses as they are in alternative street art galleries. The presence of a large artist population is immediately evident to any visitor, as local storefronts reveal the country’s best shopping and finest restaurant menus.
While cultural pursuits are important here, locals are also passionate sports fans and Melbourne proudly hosts the annual Australian Open tennis tournament. During the week, students in our English courses in Melbourne spend a lot of their time lying on beach towels or balancing atop surfboards. On the weekends, head out the Great Ocean Road and see the staggering beauty of the 12 apostles, a series of giant rock formations emerging from the crystal blue sea. In Melbourne, it’s not uncommon to swim in the ocean, visit an art gallery and watch an Australian Rules football match; all in the same day.
